Abstract:
Quantum Mechanics (QM) is
probably the most successful theory in the history of physics. It is usually
stated that its mathematical formalism is based on the Schrödinger equation,
which is assumed to describe all the physical phenomena (at least at
non-relativistic level). However, there are physical processes, notably the
measurements, where the Schrödinger equation is violated. To overcome these
difficulties, the standard formulation of QM includes a set of postulates suggested
by phenomenology. It is legitimate to ask if it would be possible to extend the
formalism to incorporate these postulates. Many proposals in this direction
have been presented in the literature, with limited success. In the seminar, a
model will be presented where these postulates and the 'paradoxes' of QM find a
natural explanation.
